Sophie Grodin and I have collaborated twice before, with each project having its own formal and thematic concerns: Control Signal (2012) and miles & miles (2015).
But we now live far apart (Karen in the UK, Sophie in Denmark) and have struggled to find the time and space to work together in the same location for our new project: WE TWO SAT FAR APART.
We took initial steps in Copenhagen in 2022, when we fell into a hole in the road while travelling to the studio — the bicycle crash itself setting in motion new trains of thought for the project. Since then, our ideas have continued to develop at a distance, but still we are sat far apart.
We are meeting again in Copenhagen for a 10-day residency in 2025. This whip-smart version is called: TWO APART.
We noticed people don’t look where they are going, people are silenced by disagreement, there is too much to be aware of each and every moment, and we spend our days in several different places in the same moment. TWO APART is Karen and Sophie’s first draft of a new performance exploring failures of presence and of communication. Exploring dislocation of attention, words falling short, and our bodies crumbling under the pressure to be fluid. With spoken word, movement and song, we’ll be looking for the crunch, the angles and the simultaneity of communication today.
Our goal is to work at speed, bringing efficiency and effectiveness to our creative process in ways distinct from our previous collaborations. We will share our findings at the Tårnby Park Performance Festival on September 5th.
