We went to the museum to see deep sea fish in jars. We were told that smell is the spirit evaporating.

In the main hall we saw a large piece of coral with shells and other creature structures embedded within it. In the Tank Rooms (called the spirit collection because everything in there is preserved in a spirit solution), we saw a giant squid in the form it was found in the belly of a fishing trawler. Disintegrating due to lack of pressure as it floated from the depth (perhaps as it died or because it died) of the deep deep sea. Tissue not meant to hold together without heavy pressure. Long left lying in a horizontal tank missing parts and fading.

Deep dark depths now brought to light, sitting in jars in the basement.

Research trip for Skywater, Facewater, Underwater Waltz.
