PLEASE NOTE: THE DEADLINE FOR THIS APPLICATION HAS PASSED

This Bursary, part of the MGCfutures Bursary Scheme, will support up to £4,000 artists’ fees and expenses for a residency to develop a new, self-made performance project in a 1,500 sq ft studio in Faversham, Kent. The studio and accommodation will be provided free of charge, adding to the value of the Bursary support. The deadline for applications is 12.00 noon on Thursday 27 January 2022.

THE STUDIO / HOUSE

The studio is part of South House, Karen Christopher and CJ Mitchell’s house in Faversham. A former sports hall, the studio has a sprung wooden floor, with natural light, and is used by artists for creative development and rehearsals. The studio has an amplifier and speakers which you can plug into; wifi; and a wooden table and chairs.

Three bedrooms (each with double beds, though one of those rooms is small) and a private bathroom are available, and can be provided free of charge as part of the residency.

Karen Christopher is a performance maker.
CJ Mitchell is a freelance producer, and is a former Co-Director of the Live Art Development Agency, London.

YOUR WORK

We don’t wish to define the content or form of the work which is developed through this scheme. However, our goal is to support the development of a new, self-made performance project which (1) has interdisciplinary interests in its research and/or creative methods; and (2) is exploring new approaches to devising and/or collaboration as an important part of the creative process. By ‘self-made’, we mean the supported artist(s) will compose, write, choreograph and/or devise their work.

This opportunity is for a solo artist or group/ensemble.

In your application, please address how the residency’s time, space and other resources will allow you to explore new areas of interest, or take risks which would not otherwise be possible.

At South House, we have supported Live Art, experimental theatre, movement and other live practices. We would like to continue our support of self-made, interdisciplinary and experimental work through this scheme. We are not seeking to support a traditional theatre or dance project.

The studio’s natural light and wooden floor, combined with limited technical capacity, means it could be particularly beneficial for early-stage performance/movement development. Please state in your application why this space would be useful for your work.

This opportunity is for private time in the studio. However, please state if you would like other support as part of your residency — eg outside eye, invited sharing/presentation of your work/work-in-progress. Please also include a proposed outline budget for up to £4,000, to cover your fees and expenses (eg travel, materials).

If you have any questions regarding South House, please contact CJ at cjmitchell37 [at] gmail [dot] com
